With its minimalistic design, a silver sphere about the size of a soccer ball, the Neuron looks almost like something out of a science fiction movie. But there’s nothing fictional about its potential to transform the future of Norway’s power grid. That’s pure science.

A speed sign for the power grid

“In the future, variable renewable energy sources will be a more prominent provider of power in Norway, adding to the current energy mix. This presents us with new challenges when it comes to when and how electrical power is produced and distributed,” says Øyvind Aarø, Account Manager at Heimdall Power. “Our power grid must be able to tackle a more dynamic mix of power sources and digitalization is the answer to much of this”.

The Neuron is a sensor that measures electrical voltage, temperature, vibration and ground clearance on power lines. More sensors and computational power are being implemented in the newest versions of the Neurons.

Guardians of the grid

“One way to explain how the Neuron works is to think of it as a speed sign that continually changes,” explains Aarø.

The Neurons enable power companies to monitor the capacity of their power lines more accurately and even predict power failures, not only improving control but actually safeguarding it.

“At Heimdall Power, we think of the Neuron more as a guardian than a sensor. We also find it to be inspirational and motivational for the people at Heimdall Power. It’s great to go to work every day knowing that you’re a ‘guardian of the grid’,” says Aarø with a smile.
